Made in the US Safes vs Assembled in the US Safes

According to the Federal Trade Commission, “Made in USA” means that “all or virtually all” the product has been physically "made" in America. This includes all significant parts, processing and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin.

So to be Made in the USA a safe would need to have the body of the safe manufactured in the US, since the body is the most significant part of a gun safe or any other safe.

Notably AMSEC (see below), Fort Knox, and Liberty use US steel in their higher end gun safes.

However, almost all safe companies now bring the body of their safes in from overseas. They then paint and assemble the safes in the US. So, if you dive in deeper to the US manufacturing claims of nearly every safe company, you will find that they mean “American Assembled.”

Hollon Gun Safes are one safe line whose US assembly quality outshines that of the lesser manufactures.

Why Buy an American Made Safes or American Assembled Safes?

Higher Quality Assembly Standards

The assembly process tends to have higher quality materials and superior craftsmanship, as they are held to American standards of construction and labor laws.

Safes made with the made in the USA designation are typically built to satisfy the high-end customers. So, they are made to higher security level specifications (such as UL burglary and fire safe ratings) than import safes.

Higher Quality Material

American safes tend to use thicker gauge steel and higher quality locks, making them more resistant to tampering, cutting, and other forms of attacks.

Better Warranties

American made also means better warranties. American made gun safes usually come with free theft / fire replacement. If the safe is ever damaged in a fire, or a forced entry attempt, it will be replaced at NO cost to the end (including shipping!). Plus, replacement parts and ancillary items are more readily available should they be needed.

Better Testing

American made often equates to more rigorous tests by UL or ETL certification standards. Other overseas certification standards exist, and they too do a good job, but many overseas safes are “self-certified” and undergo no testing procedures to back their claims other than internal testing by the manufacturer.

You are Supporting US Businesses

By purchasing American made / assembled, you are supporting businesses working within the American economy. This can lead to a stronger economy and increased employment opportunities,  as well as a sense of pride.

You Get USA-Based Product Support

USA-based product support means if you need them, you'll be speaking to someone right here in the US to help assist you. At AMSEC, your customer support is based at their Fontana, California production facilities. At Hollon Safe, their support team is based out of Corpus Christi, Texas.

Taking it one step further, if you're in the Phoenix area, your safe will not only be made-in the USA but also sold by, delivered, installed, and supported by ACME Locksmith, a local company and one-stop shop for all your safe need.

Differences Between USA-Made and Import Safes:

  • A safe door with up to ½ thick solid steel plates
  • The American Security (AMSEC) BF Gun Safe Line has 2” thick concrete composite filled walls between two layers of steel. Even if you don 't own a gun, this safe will secure your most valuable possessions with it’s flexible shelving configuration, and gun safes are a better buy per cubic ft, than non-gun safes.
  • Higher rated safes such as RSC, TL-15s and TL-30's which are often required on rider insurance policies.
  • Bigger diameter bolts and u-channel steel bolt work for the extraction of the bolts, made to last a lifetime
  • Exterior steel thickness up to 50% thicker than cheap warehouse foreign brands.
  • Interior steel construction options near 1/4" thick.
  • Independent certified fire ratings (link) up to 2 hours.
  • USA-based Customer Service product support—yes you read that right – USA BASED!
  • Up to 5 years electronic warranties and free repair/replacement safes in case of fire or forcible entry (on specific models, exclusions apply)
  • Up to 5 years replacement parts warranties (on specific models, exclusions apply)
USA Build Quality

American Security AMSEC Makes the Best US Made Safe

We prefer American Security AMSEC safes safes to any other brand of safe that is made in the US.

Very few safe companies still manufacture their own safe bodies, yet American Security has been doing it for over 75 years.

AMSEC has several lines of safes made using US steel and assembled in their California manufacturing plant. The US Made safes by AMSEC include:

  • Gun Safes: RF, RFX, BFII, and BFX safe lines
  • CFX, CF and CE vaults
  • BWB cash management safes
  • DXF and DXE high security money chests
  • BLC and BLB burglary rated money chests
  • ACF TL30 componsite safes

Safes with the American made designation from AMSEC can weigh hundreds of pounds more than competing US made safes of similar size.

Fort Knox and Liberty also have safe lines using American steel, but we favor AMSEC for their overall quality and construction of the safe.

It's our professional opinion, you get more security from AMSEC when comparing it against other made in the USA safes at similar price points.

American Made Steel vs Chinese Steel

American steel outperforms import steel in the following way.

Tensile Strength:

US Steel: Domestic steel produced in the US often meets specific ASTM standards, resulting in consistent and well-defined tensile strength values for different grades.

Import Steel: Tensile strength can vary depending on the manufacturing practices and standards of the country of origin. Imported steel might exhibit a broader range of tensile strength values.

Corrosion Resistance:

US Steel: Some domestic steel producers in the US offer steel products with specialized coatings or treatments to enhance corrosion resistance, suitable for specific applications.

Import Steel: Corrosion resistance of imported steel can depend on the level of corrosion protection applied during manufacturing and may vary based on the source country's environmental conditions.

Durability and Longevity:

US Steel: US steel products are often designed to meet specific durability and longevity requirements, making them suitable for various long-lasting applications.

Import Steel: The durability and longevity of imported steel can vary based on manufacturing practices and the intended use of the steel.

Impact Resistance:

US Steel: Domestic steel products may have known impact resistance properties that are tested and verified to meet specific standards.

Import Steel: Impact resistance of imported steel can depend on the manufacturing processes and quality control measures in place in the exporting country.

Q&A
